The first scale on trumpet

Written C major from middle C is the first octave a trumpet player learns: open, 1-3, 1-2, 1, open, 1-2, 2, open. Notice that C, G and the top C are all open: the lips choose the note, the valves only lengthen the tube. It sounds B♭ major, so a piano playing along plays B♭.
