Up one way, down another
Melodic minor smooths out the jump in harmonic minor by raising the 6th as well as the 7th, so a melody can climb to the octave without a step and a half. Classical scale books come down in natural minor. Jazz players keep the raised notes both ways and call it "jazz minor"; its modes give the altered scale and Lydian dominant.
