Tune your 808 in FL Studio

Drop the 808 you loaded into a Sampler channel. Read its note here, save it tuned, then tell FL Studio which key plays it at its own pitch. FL Studio numbers octaves one higher than this page; the steps below say where that matters.

Mika, the resident

Mika reads the tail, you right-click the key. That is the whole split of the work.Pick a WAV, AIFF or MP3 of one hit. It is read in this browser.

or drop a file on this card

In FL Studio, step by step

  1. Read the 808 above. Leave the target on the nearest note and save the tuned WAV: the cents are gone, the length is the same.
  2. Drag the tuned WAV into the Channel rack. It opens as a Sampler channel.
  3. Click the channel's name to open its Channel settings, then the Miscellaneous tab.
  4. At the bottom is the preview keyboard. Right-click the key the line under the result names. That key turns blue: it is the root note, the key that plays the sample at its own pitch.
  5. Play a C on that keyboard: it sounds a C. If it sounds an octave off, you right-clicked one octave off.

Keeping the original file instead? The Miscellaneous tab has a FINE knob that fine-tunes the root note in cents. The tuned WAV spares you working out which way to turn it.

Checked against Image-Line's FL Studio manual: Miscellaneous channel settings (the preview keyboard sets the root key with a right-click, the default root key is C5, FINE in cents, Mono, Porta, SLIDE) and the Sampler channel settings (PITCH keeps the length).

Why FL Studio says F2 when this page says F1

This page names notes the scientific way: middle C, MIDI note 60, is C4, and A4 is 440 Hz. FL Studio calls that same key C5, which is why its Sampler's default root key is C5. So every note on FL Studio's keyboard and in its piano roll is named one octave higher than here: an 808 at F1 (43.65 Hz) is F2 in FL Studio. Same key, same pitch, another name.

The line under the result gives the note in FL Studio's numbering. Counting by hand: add one to the octave.

Slides and the 808 in FL Studio

An 808 that slides from note to note is set on the same Miscellaneous tab. Mono plays one note at a time and slides overlapping notes into each other; Porta slides between all notes; SLIDE sets how long the slide takes. With the root key right, every slide lands on the note you wrote.

The Sampler's PITCH knob, with the time-stretch options, also moves the pitch and keeps the length; for the root key you don't need it. Tune the file once here, set the key once there.

Then make something of it

The note goes into Brumm as a bassline on an 808, in a running club track. The WAV is yours: 24-bit, mono; a WAV keeps its sample rate.

Audio: a file you choose, opened in this tab; once it is chosen, no request leaves the page. The sound is analysed in this tab and never sent. Nothing about the audio reaches the visit count.
