The D harmonic minor scale on guitar
One position, frets 9–13, low E string first: low E: 9 10 12 13 (C♯ D E F) · A: 10 12 13 (G A B♭) · D: 11 12 (C♯ D) · G: 9 10 12 (E F G) · B: 10 11 (A B♭) · high E: 9 10 12 13 (C♯ D E F). 0 = open string.
The root D sits at fret 10 on the low E string and at fret 5 on the A string. Slide the same shape there for any other root.
B flat and C sharp together
D harmonic minor holds both a flat and a sharp: B♭ from the key signature, C♯ raised to lead home to D. The step and a half from B♭ to C♯ is its signature; you hear it in Bach's D minor pieces and in a lot of metal.
