The G harmonic minor scale on guitar
One position, frets 2–6, low E string first: low E: 2 3 5 6 (F♯ G A B♭) · A: 3 5 6 (C D E♭) · D: 4 5 (F♯ G) · G: 2 3 5 (A B♭ C) · B: 3 4 (D E♭) · high E: 2 3 5 6 (F♯ G A B♭). 0 = open string.
The root G sits at fret 3 on the low E string and at fret 10 on the A string. Slide the same shape there for any other root.
F sharp in a flat key
G minor has two flats, B♭ and E♭; harmonic minor adds F♯, so the key signature shows flats while the music keeps writing a sharp. The jump from E♭ to F♯ is the step and a half that gives it its sound, popular in Klezmer, flamenco and neoclassical guitar.
