One position, frets 2–6, low E string first: low E: 2 3 5 (F♯ G A) · A: 2 3 5 (B C D) · D: 2 4 5 (E F♯ G) · G: 2 4 5 (A B C) · B: 3 5 (D E) · high E: 2 3 5 (F♯ G A). 0 = open string.

The root G sits at fret 3 on the low E string and at fret 10 on the A string. Slide the same shape there for any other root.

The campfire key

G major is the key of G, C, D and Em, the first four chords most guitarists learn, so its scale is where melodies and fills for those songs come from. Its one sharp, F♯, is the note to watch: on the low E it is the 2nd fret, on the D string the 4th. In open position the scale uses every open string except the low E's F.
