Hum to MIDI

Tap, four ticks count you in, hum two bars. Hear what it heard, then save it as a MIDI file for any music app.

Mika, the resident

Mika keeps the notes and lets the voice go. Two bars, a few hundred bytes.Four ticks count you in at 123 BPM, then the microphone listens for two bars, about four seconds, and closes. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

What a MIDI file is, and isn't

A MIDI file is a list of notes: which pitch, when it starts, how long it lasts, how hard it's played. There is no sound in it, and none of your voice. The app that opens it decides what it sounds like; most play a piano until you pick another instrument.

That makes it small (this one is a few hundred bytes) and easy to change: move a note, swap the synth, slow it down, and nothing gets worse. If you want your voice itself, a MIDI file is the wrong thing; record audio for that.

What your hum became

Each note is rounded to the nearest semitone, so slides and vibrato are gone, and its start and end are snapped to sixteenths at 123 BPM, two bars of 4/4. It stays in the octave you hummed. Every note gets the same velocity (loudness): a hum has no touch worth keeping. One track, one note at a time.

Apps disagree on what to call middle C: some say C3, others C4. It is the same note, number 60 in the file, which is why the roll shows names without octave numbers. Hum after the four ticks, on the beat, and the grid has less to guess.

Which apps open it

Any app that reads standard MIDI files: GarageBand on the iPhone, iPad and Mac, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Cubase, Reaper, BandLab, and MuseScore, which writes it out as sheet music. On a laptop, drag the file onto a track. The file says 123 BPM, so the notes land on the grid.

On a phone the Download button hands the file to the share sheet: save it to Files, or send it to your laptop. On an iPhone, GarageBand takes it from its loop browser, under Files.

Or skip the DAW

Your two bars go into Brumm, in time, inside a club track with a beat and a bass. No account, no upload: the melody travels inside the link itself. The app downloads the whole idea as MIDI too, a track for every layer, beat and bass included.

Your voice stays on your phone: the tool reads it in the browser and keeps nothing. How the site counts visits.
