How to tune
C6 is the lap steel's home tuning: C E G A C E from the sixth string to the first, a C major chord with the sixth (A) in the middle, which gives both the major and the relative minor under one straight bar. Open G, D G D G B D, is the bluesier one on the switch.
On a lap steel the bar does the fretting, and it sits right over the fret marker, not behind it as a finger would; tune the open strings dead on, then check a chord at the 12th fret with the bar straight over the line. If the open strings tick and the bar chord doesn't, it's the bar, not the tuning.
Then play something
The notes you tuned can go into Brumm as a short melody over a beat. Hum a line on top and it becomes an instrument.
