Online metronome

Set a tempo, press Start and play along. Type the BPM, drag the slider or tap it in; choose the beats in a bar, an accent on the one, and a subdivision for slow practice. The click is booked on the phone's audio clock, so it holds its tempo for as long as you play.

The tempo words, in BPM

Sheet music often gives a word instead of a number. These are the common ranges of the Italian tempo markings; tap a word to set the metronome to the middle of its range.

Conventions vary: these are the usual ranges, not a law. Metronome makers, editions and teachers draw the lines a little differently, and the ranges overlap, so at 120 the readout says both Moderato and Allegro. A composer's word describes a character as much as a speed.

How to practise with a metronome

Start slower than you can play the passage, play it clean, and add a few BPM only once it sits. With a subdivision on, the click fills the space between the beats: eighths for a slow ballad that tends to rush, triplets for a shuffle or a 12/8 feel, sixteenths for fast runs and funk strumming. Turn the accent off when every beat should weigh the same, or when you want to hear the click as the off-beat.

For 6/8, set six beats with the accent on, or two beats with triplets, which is how it is usually felt. A waltz is three, most pop and rock four. If you don't know a song's tempo, tap it in with the Tap button or let the BPM counter listen to it; for the delay and LFO times at a tempo, tap tempo has the table.

Why it doesn't drift, and what still can go wrong

A metronome built on a page timer wobbles whenever the phone is busy. This one books each click on the browser's audio clock a fraction of a second ahead, the way a sequencer does, so the beat stays put while the page scrolls or redraws. A tempo change while it plays takes effect from the next click; a new number of beats starts the bar again on the one.

Three honest limits. Bluetooth headphones and speakers delay every click by a fixed amount, often 150 to 250 ms: still steady, but late against the dots on the screen, so use the phone's speaker or a cable if you play to the dots. On an iPhone the silent switch can mute it. And a phone that locks its screen may stop the sound; the page asks to keep the screen on while it clicks, where the browser allows that.

Then make something at that tempo

The door opens Brumm at your tempo with a straight beat: a club track waiting for a melody. Hum a line over it and it becomes an instrument. No account, no upload: the tempo travels inside the link.

Nothing leaves your phone: the clicks are made in your browser, no microphone is used, and nothing is recorded or sent. How the site counts visits.

Audio: tones your browser makes on this page; no microphone. Nothing about the audio reaches the visit count.
