Banjo tuner

A free banjo tuner in your phone's browser: five-string open G (g D G B D) one string at a time, with a needle and the cents; double C, open D and tenor banjo as switches. Nothing uploaded.

The microphone stays open while you tune and closes when you stop, when everything is in tune, or after half a minute of quiet. Nothing is recorded or sent.

How to tune

A five-string banjo in open G is g D G B D, from the short fifth string to the first: strum it open and it rings a G chord. The short drone string is the highest note, though it sits at the bottom of the neck. Pluck one string and let it ring; the tuner moves on at the tick.

Double C (g C G C D) is for old-time tunes in C, open D (f♯ D F♯ A D) for tunes in D. A four-string tenor banjo is tuned C G D A, like a viola.

The needle shows how far you are from the note the tuner expects, in cents: a hundred cents is a semitone, five or closer gets the tick, and anything inside twenty most people don't hear.

Then play something

The notes you tuned go into Brumm as a short melody, inside a club track with a beat and a bass. No account, no upload: the notes travel inside the link itself. Hum or play a line there, and it becomes an instrument.

The microphone is read in the browser and nothing is kept. How the site counts visits.
