Formula: 1 ♭3 4 ♭5 5 ♭7. Steps from note to note: 3 2 1 1 3 2 semitones (one and a half, whole, half, half, one and a half, whole).

Six notes and a bent one
The blues scale adds a single note to the minor pentatonic, the ♭5, and that note is the blues: a passing tone between the 4th and the 5th that singers and guitarists bend into. Over a 12-bar blues in A it works across all three chords, A7, D7 and E7. There is also a major blues scale (major pentatonic plus the ♭3); this page is the common one.
