Formula: 1 ♭3 4 ♭5 5 ♭7. Steps from note to note: 3 2 1 1 3 2 semitones (one and a half, whole, half, half, one and a half, whole).

The F minor pentatonic scale with one note added: B, the flat fifth, the blue note. Slide through it, don't sit on it.

One position, frets 0–4, low E string first: low E: 1 4 (F A♭) · A: 1 2 3 (B♭ B C) · D: 1 3 (E♭ F) · G: 1 3 4 (A♭ B♭ B) · B: 0 1 4 (B C E♭) · high E: 1 4 (F A♭). 0 = open string.

The root F sits at fret 1 on the low E string and at fret 8 on the A string. Slide the same shape there for any other root.

Horn players' blues

F is the key of countless jazz blues ("Blues for Alice", "Billie's Bounce", "Now's the Time"), because it suits B♭ and E♭ horns. The blue note is B natural, often written C♭: on the piano the white key between B♭ and C.
