Balalaika tuner

A free balalaika tuner in your phone's browser: the prima's E E A, one string at a time with a needle and the cents; sekunda and alto as switches. Nothing uploaded.

The microphone stays open while you tune and closes when you stop, when everything is in tune, or after half a minute of quiet. Nothing is recorded or sent.

How to tune

The prima balalaika, the one most people own, is tuned E E A: the two lower strings in unison on the E above middle C, the top string a fourth higher. Tune both E strings to the same note, then the A; strum all three and the E pair should sound like one string.

The sekunda is a fifth lower (A A D), the alto an octave below the prima (E E A). In the old folk tuning, players also use a guitar-like G B D ("guitar tuning"); for that, the 432 Hz tuner's "Any note" switch at A = 440 names whatever you play.

The needle shows how far you are from the note the tuner expects, in cents: a hundred cents is a semitone, five or closer gets the tick, and anything inside twenty most people don't hear.

Then play something

The notes you tuned go into Brumm as a short melody, inside a club track with a beat and a bass. No account, no upload: the notes travel inside the link itself. Hum or play a line there, and it becomes an instrument.

The microphone is read in the browser and nothing is kept. How the site counts visits.
