Cavaquinho tuner

A free cavaquinho tuner in your phone's browser: D G B D, the samba and choro tuning, one string at a time with a needle and the cents; D G B E as a switch. Nothing uploaded.

The microphone stays open while you tune and closes when you stop, when everything is in tune, or after half a minute of quiet. Nothing is recorded or sent.

How to tune

The Brazilian cavaquinho is tuned D G B D, low to high: strummed open, it's a G major chord, the sound of samba and pagode. Pluck each steel string and let it ring; turn the peg until the needle sits in the middle, and the tuner moves on to the next.

D G B E ("natural" tuning) is the top four strings of a guitar, an octave up, handy if you come from the guitar. Steel strings are tight on a small body: turn slowly near the end, a little goes a long way.

The needle shows how far you are from the note the tuner expects, in cents: a hundred cents is a semitone, five or closer gets the tick, and anything inside twenty most people don't hear.

Then play something

The notes you tuned go into Brumm as a short melody, inside a club track with a beat and a bass. No account, no upload: the notes travel inside the link itself. Hum or play a line there, and it becomes an instrument.

The microphone is read in the browser and nothing is kept. How the site counts visits.
