How to tune
Two instruments share the name. The Venezuelan cuatro has four single nylon strings, A D F♯ B from the fourth to the first, and it's re-entrant: the first string, B, sits below the F♯ next to it. Tune the A, D and F♯ up the neck, then drop to the B.
The Puerto Rican cuatro has ten strings in five pairs, B E A D G, the national instrument of the island. Its two lowest pairs, B and E, are octave pairs, one thin string an octave above the thick one; the tuner folds octaves, so tune both against the same note. The top three pairs are unisons.
Then play something
The notes you tuned can go into Brumm as a short melody over a beat. Hum a line on top and it becomes an instrument.
