Oud tuner

A free oud tuner in your phone's browser: the Arabic tuning C F A D G C, one course at a time, with a needle and the cents; the low D and G tuning as a switch. Nothing uploaded.

The microphone stays open while you tune and closes when you stop, when everything is in tune, or after half a minute of quiet. Nothing is recorded or sent.

How to tune

The Arabic oud is tuned C F A D G C from the single low string to the highest course, in fourths with one major third. Tune one string of each pair until the needle sits in the middle, then the other, then play both together: when the slow wobble stops, they agree.

Many players drop the two lowest to D and G (D G A D G C); it's the switch above the courses. The oud is unfretted, so tuning is the one moment the instrument tells you exactly where the notes are: take your time with the A and the D, they are the ones you'll hear most.

The needle shows how far you are from the note the tuner expects, in cents: a hundred cents is a semitone, five or closer gets the tick, and anything inside twenty most people don't hear.

Then play something

The notes you tuned go into Brumm as a short melody, inside a club track with a beat and a bass. No account, no upload: the notes travel inside the link itself. Hum or play a line there, and it becomes an instrument.

The microphone is read in the browser and nothing is kept. How the site counts visits.
